Hello!

Just wanted to let you in on some exciting developments within FCA… Recently God has blessed us to be a part of several athletic programs in Central Kentucky. Right now, we have 10 athletic teams that are having weekly FCA Chapels or devotions. These devotions are usually 10-15 minutes and take place at the invitation of one or more players and with the approval of the coach. Up until now, we as staff have been the primary “chaplains” and we have been taking individuals from the FCA speakers list along with us lead some devotions. There has been some tremendous fruit that has came from these brief times together. Already, we have seen numerous athletes and even a coach decide to give up their life of independence and begin living a life of dependence on Christ! Numerous of seeds have been planted. One student even requested to lead the devotion and did a tremendous job of challenging his peers to let Christ be the leader of their life.

It has become apparent to us at FCA that God wants us to expand this ministry to other area teams as several coaches are now coming to us asking us to help them with weekly chapels. After much prayer, counsel, and witnessing God’s hand going before us, we couldn’t be more excited about the vision that God has placed on our hearts! We are praying that God would raise up 100 volunteer team chaplains for 100 different athletic teams (Middle, High School, and Colleges) throughout Central Kentucky! Would you join us in helping make this vision a reality?

Are you an athlete that would like FCA to help you have weekly team devotions throughout your athletic season? Are you a coach would be willing to open the door for FCA and some of your players have a weekly team chapel? Are you a former athlete that loves the Lord and misses the smell of the locker room? Would your Sunday school class or accountability group desire to serve a team together as chaplains? If the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, we want to hear from you! We will keep you posted on how you can be apart of this exciting opportunity to see our “athletes and coaches impacted for Jesus Christ.” As we continue to identify coaches and athletes that would be interested in participating, we desire to simultaneously begin identifying, training, and placing volunteer FCA Chaplains with the hope that by the beginning of your sports next season we will be ready to go… from 10 teams to 50! Then from 50 teams to 100! We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Gavin Duerson, Heather Summers, Rusty Parks, and Shelia Smith

Central Kentucky FCA Staff

“This (having FCA Team Chapel) is the best decision I have made since I started coaching. We have done this on the side, but to have different speakers coming in has been great. This is why I went into coaching and I am so thankful for your support and help.”

Midrand, South Africa: 6 January 2009 – The 2009 Siemens Africa Profile Awards competition has opened for entries, seeking to honour African journalists excelling in science and technology journalism. The Siemens Profile Awards, now in their eighth year, are the only pan-African awards that exclusively promote science and technology journalism. African journalists are invited to submit entries before 31 January 2009 for any work published in print, online or broadcast media.
Resource: Web Directory

Announcing the call for entries, Manager Media Relations at Siemens Southern Africa, Ms Sithembile Mokaeane, said the annual awards have become a leading item on the continent’s journalism calendar.
“We are impressed by the increased number of entries from all media platforms, and the general improvement in the quality of submissions,” she said. “The African media is continually prioritising science and technology coverage.”
Mokaeane said the 2007 Siemens Profile Awards attracted a record 264 entries from 17 African countries. The entries were in four languages: English, French, Portuguese and Arabic. The heightened media interest in science and technology issues during this year is expected to boost entries. Issues such as the surge in technology uptake and increased science research across the continent are already emerging as prominent themes in media coverage.
Mokaeane announced that award categories have been changed. The 2009 entries may be submitted in six categories, namely, industry, energy, healthcare, information technology (with emphasis on business process and outsourcing), technology-related corporate social responsibility and the student category
She said online submissions are welcome at www.profileawards.co.za or by post or courier to Siemens country offices around Africa.
The Siemens Profile Awards aim to advance quality science and technology reporting. Journalists are encouraged to identify country specific technology issues and by addressing them bring about change in social-economic conditions. The awards encourage African science journalists to anchor their reporting in sound research, quality reporting and individual journalistic flair.
