Heart of a Coach
Selected Struggle: Patience
Dictionary definition: “The ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay.”
My definition: “Maintaining perspective while persisting toward the greater goal.”
Favorite Scripture that deals with patience: Galatians 6:9 (NIV) – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Why I chose this verse: “Galatians 6:9 reminds me that enduring faith and patience will be rewarded. It’s easy to focus on results, but it is the relentless pursuit of the process that will earn success. A quote about patience that means a lot to me is from Lyman Abbott: ‘Patience is passion tamed.’”

How patience applies to me as a coach: “Each day brings a variety of highs and lows for me and my athletes. It is my job as a leader to address these situations with an enduring sense of confidence.
“Lacrosse is a game of constant movement and activity. I try to instill in my athletes the need to stay in the present situation without focusing on the past. Maintaining the patience to stick with every play is paramount to our success. In both practice and in games I try to coach my girls to never give into frustration.”
How patience applies to my life: “Patience has been a struggle for me in my visions of everyday life. I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to start the first Division I lacrosse program at Liberty. I had big plans that soon turned into lofty expectations. It didn’t take long for God to remind me of the importance of patience on the journey to success. I still have big dreams, but I now focus on the small steps along the way.”
